I haven't A/B'd your transcription
to the recording, but I can identify the chord you reference above: it
is in fact, an AUGMENTED triad. Two major
thirds stacked on top of each other (B flat to D, D to F#).

Mike plays a lot of chords that I don't even know what they ARE (um,
"Uglytown" verses, anyone?). I just ordered my copy of Ted Greene's
"Chord Chemistry" (thanks for the suggestion, Dougie!), so maybe
I can like, get a clue or something.
Mike is the Question Mark and
the Mysterians of chord architects, ain't he? The more I delve into his
stuff, the more I find things that are implied but ever actually played,
y'know? Not just implied motion, but implied NOTES, fercryin'outloud!
Sometimes there'll be one note just screaming "I'm here!" in
a certain part, and when I sit down and work it out...it's not there.
It just ain't even there. That's weird, man. That kind of thinking is
just so wonderful... what a playful character. I love figuring out that,
say, chord X in part Y is a C# dominant of some ilk, and I work out all
the voicings I can think up for that sucker, and then find out it's actually
NONE of them. Either that or I can't figure out which one it is... I've
been playing around with Natty Trousers, by the way, and I hope to have
that up soonly. Well, maybe soonly-ish...ly. The tuning is EGDGAE. Or
possibly something else... What was that other tuning again, Dougie?
Best,
Bill T
