The Bird Brain is a new band and we are on Bandcamp

The Bird Brain is a band that’s been meeting, on the sneak, every few months-ish since 2015 (with a significant pandemic break in there) to compose and practice new music together.

We have created a three-song, 23-minute EP and it’s now on Bandcamp: thebirdbrain.bandcamp.com

Big Eye Cutie

The component parts of The Bird Brain are:

myself (whom you know),

Pete Griffin (bassist with ZPZ, Paul Gilbert, Dethklok when Beller is unavailable, and newly a member of ProgJect as well),

Kris Myers (drummer with the celebrated Umphrey’s McGee, and along with Pete the core rhythm unit on Scambot 2),

Jonathan Sindelman (brilliant keyboardist with the Alan White Band [he was just a part of the core band for the Alan White tribute that occurred in Seattle, like, moments ago] as well as the Keith Emerson Band and the marvelous Yes tribute act Parallels), and,

Ben Thomas (vocalist, trombonist-trumpetist-percussionist-guitarist, formerly frontman of ZPZ and also collaborator with Aloe Blacc, Danny Carey and others, as well as another vital ingredient within Scambot 2).

The music we make together is unlike any other music I’ve heard. Fiercely rhythmic, texturally trippy and complex, lyrically a product of Ben’s under-tapped obsessions, and spiritually proudly free and forward-looking.

My hope is that YOU, the sort of person who peruses Keneally.com for a good time, will find The Bird Brain to be a vital part of your musical menu.

I really look forward to doing more with these guys, and am deeply grateful to be able to present this EP (after seven years!) as an outward demonstration of our collaborative energy. There’s more to come, for sure. (We’ve got another four tunes in the works.)

Enough of this yappin’. (I sure can yap, can’t I?) It’s time for you to go to Bandcamp and hear what we sound like!

(And if you are seeing this on Fri. Oct. 7 which is Bandcamp Friday which is when Bandcamp doesn’t take any percentage of any proceeds and all money goes to the artists, well, shucks, all the better! And thanks!)

The Zappa Band at Progstock and The Baked Potato this month

We got a few things happening…this Friday we’re playing at ProgStock, a three-day festival in Rahway, NJ. We’re headlining the first night, Oct. 7. It’s gonna be good to play again! Been a few months right? I’ve spent the last week brushing up on all my parts, trying to even more extensively micro-analyze all the details, so if you hear any increased authority and/or authenticity in what I have to deliver, I shall know ‘twas not for naught.

(Separate from Zappa Band happenings but relevant to ProgStock, on Sunday Oct. 9 at the same dang festival I’ll be sitting in with the absolutely marvelous Rachel Flowers on her set, playing on two of her compositions as well as on an ELP classic. Joe Travers mentioned in an email to me this week that Rachel is “inspiring.” This is absolutely correct and I’m very happy to finally, for the first time, share a stage with her.)

(some of the other artists appearing: Stick Men! Adam Holzman! District 97! Pattern-Seeking Animals! Matt Dorsey! Dave Kerzner! Lots of other luminaries! Come on!)

At the end of this month we will continue what appears to be shaping up as an annual tradition – four nights of The Zappa Band at the Baked Potato, Oct. 28-31. Halloween, as y’all know, is a major Zappa holiday, and last year’s Halloween Potato run was so much freaking fun…two sets a night (set one will be different from set two every night), so there’s eight opportunities for you to be there with us.

Progject at Alvas in San Pedro this weekend, Sep. 24 and 25

It is true, I swear to you it’s true, that Alvas in San Pedro has been home to some very memorable performances in my life. San Pedro in general has exerted an energy throughout my life which is unique in my existence. It is somehow fish-related and it has strong family undercurrents and it claims a hold on my consciousness which is true and somehow orange-hued. Anyhow, that’s the first paragraph, I hope you liked it!

But the reason I’m here right now, typing this whilst also reeling from delighted exhaustion and gleeful overwork, is because this very weekend I’m doing two shows at ALVAS SHOWROOM with my dear pals in the entirely-too-entertaining band PROGJECT. I’m here in LA this week rehearsing with these guys. I can’t even express how exhilarating and just plain fun it is to be playing these prog ‘70s classics – just song after song after song that I grew up loving so much when I was a kid – and playing them with these dudes that I enjoy hanging out with so much, it’s just such a treat. These rehearsals have been frankly fantastic and I’m very excited about these gigs.

I know some of this energy will be making its way to the people in attendance at these two shows, and I hope circumstances allow for you to be one of them. This is my solemn desire! I know it’s true because I just typed it with my own dang ten dang fingers! (I really need to sleep – let me wrap this up…)
